Secrets by One Republic would be a song that María would listen to because our group believes she has a very open and honest personality, especially towards Matt. The following quotes from the book shows María’s willingness to talk to Matt, even though he is a clone.

-"I do like being with you," María said at last. "There's nobody at my school so easy to talk to." (Farmer 159)

-"María's interest drove Matt to greater and greater heights. He talked feverishly, unable to stop, and he ground his teeth from sheer nervousness. He'd never had so much attention in his life. Celia tried to listen to him, but she was usually too tired. María hung on his words as though her life depended on them." (Farmer 31)
This passage relates to the lyrics “I need another story, something to get off my chest, my life gets kind of boring, need something that I can confess,” because María was intrigued by Matt’s new and exciting stories.

These last two supporting details are pretty self-explanatory and clearly relate to the song’s title. Furthermore, Secrets has a fairly soft melody that fits well with María’s personality.
-"He knew because she'd told him ahead of time. She was no good at keeping secrets." (Farmer 111)
-María told him about how she struggled not to loser her temper at Emilia, how she copied someone's paper when she forgot to do her homework, and how she ate ice cream when she was suppose to be fasting. (Farmer 158)

Ave Maria by Bach and Gounod
Chapter 7, Page 66-67
-"You want us to go?" cried María.  "After we made up and all?" Matt nodded.

' "Well, I think you're a pig!  And I'm not going to be mean to Tom just because you don't like him.  Besides, everyone thinks you're awful." María slammed the door behind her.'

Chapter 16, page 157
' "I first decided to forgive you after reading The Flowers of Saint Francis," Maria began.  "You remember the wolf I talked about?  Well, he was a monster that terrorized everybody until Saint Francis gave him a talking-to.  He was as sweet as a lamb and never ate anything but vegetables after that." '

' "I didn't know that wolves could digest vegetables," said Matt, who had studied biology.
"That's not the point.  Saint Francis didn't say, 'I'm going to punish you for all the wickedness that you've done.'  He said, 'Brother Wolf, today is a new day and you're going to turn over a new leaf." '

We believe that this song would be good for María to listen to after getting mad at Matt.  The song Hail Mary, or Ave Maria in Latin, is composed of Bach's Prelude in C Major and a superimposed melody by Charles Gounod.  Often times, the lyrics sung to this song is the Latin version of Hail Mary, a traditional Catholic prayer.  Perhaps this song will remind María that it isn't nice to be mad at people, and drive her to forgive Matt.  This song could also provoke feelings in María that are much like Matt's thoughts in the prison.

Thank You by Simple Plan

We believe this song would be a song that María would listen to when she felt betrayed by Matt for making her kiss him and killing Furball. Although the melody wouldn’t fit right after Matt does these things, the lyrics definitely would. Specifically, the lyrics “So thank you for showing me that best friends cannot be trusted. And thank you for lying to me, your friendship, the good times we had” show María’s lost of trust in Matt. We also think that Maria would enjoy this upbeat song when she’s at boarding school to rid her sadness and feel better about the situation.

' "I did apologize," Matt managed to say.
"And she wouldn't accept it. Well, that happens sometimes. Sometimes we have to grovel to show we mean it." ' (Farmer 123)

-"María refused to talk to Matt. She his in her father's apartment or managed to be with a group of people every time he saw her." (Farmer 126)
-"María would be leaving for boarding school soon. Matt realized he had to act now." (Farmer 126)

' "María-" began Matt.
"Oh hi. Listen I've got to run. Dada will get mad if I don't come back right away."
"I just want to talk."
"Not now!" cried María, dodging past him. She ran down the hall, her sandals slapping against the floor.
Matt felt like crying. Why was she making things so difficult? Would it kill her to listen? ' (Farmer 129-130)

We are Broken by Paramore

‘ “Give that back,” Matt said, angry that she had made a scene in front of everyone.

“You don’t deserve it!” Maria started to run away, but she was halted by her father Senator Mendoza.’ (Farmer 108)

“Matt knew this was different though. He was humiliating her.” (Farmer 110)

This song, especially the chorus, talks about the fracturing of a relationship, and the loss of innocence involved. Before this there was very little conflict between Maria and Matt, and it was a very innocent relationship. At El Patron’s party though Matt started being cruel to Tom and Maria, and without what Maria considered a good reason. In the aftermath she would probably be questioning what her friendship with Matt was really like, and if that was what he was normally like. After that incident it would be hard to go back to being friends like they were before, when Maria didn’t suspect that Matt might do anything like that. A line that would refer to this is "I've seen worlds that don't belong" which would be talking about the things Matt did that Maria didn't expect.

After the Storm by Mumford and Sons
A hard part of María's life was having to grow up without her mother, Esperanza. She was told by her father and siblings (deceived, actually) that her mother was dead (though María always imagined that she was in the desert). Her mother's death hurt her terribly and when Matt brought her up (see quote) she was shocked.

We feel that After the Storm would be a song that she would listen to to calm herself down on those days where she longs for her mother. ("And there will come a time, you'll see, with no more tears. And love will not break your heart, but dismiss your fears.")

" María gasped. "M-Mother?"

"You remember what she looked like?"
"Dada has pictures." She took the book and stared at the portrait and its accompanying as though she'd been turned to stone. "Mother got the Nobel Peace Prize," she whispered.
"And a lot more," said Matt.
"But she n-never came back." María's looked so forlorn, Matt's heart turned over. " (Farmer 209-210)

Peace Train by Cat Stevens
The song Peace Train is simply about the dream of living in a peaceful world where there's no war and everybody loves everybody. No surprise, since the song was written in 1971 (same year as the song Imagine by John Lennon). Maria hates the way Matt is discriminated against despite the fact that he is smart, musically talented, and compassionate. She hates that El Patron can force her to marry whomever he chooses. She despises the social class system established in Opium. This is her song because it represents the perfect world she envisions, where she could make her own choices about marriage and friendship. Where there were no eejits, no easily broken illegalities, and no Farm Patrol. A world where everyone has mobility rights. A world where Felicia couldn't just get away with the coldblooded murder of Furball.

Winter Winds by Mumford and Sons
After carefully examining the lyrics, we decided to choose this song the represent the complications of Matt and María's relationship due to Matt's status as a clone and María's status as the daughter of a powerful senator. Despite Matt being a clone, María reaches out to him and the two share a strong friendship and, later, maybe even romantic relationship. However, eventually their differences begin to force them apart against their will. Winter Winds is a song about two people who love each other but can't be together for complicated reasons. The song itself is written in a very convoluted way, as though its cryptically written lyrics are a metaphor for the complications of the two characters' love. In addition, we also felt the song had little Spanish echoes in the instrumental, mainly in the horn and guitar. We love it.

"But some love you.  I'm speaking of María and, of course, Celia." (Farmer 81)

"But I didn't! I wouldn't!  I couldn't do such a thing to María!  I love her!" (Farmer 133)

An Honest Mistake by The Bravery

“I’m not like that thing!” Shouted Matt. “Use your eyes!” He tried to pull her away from Tom and she shrieked, “Don’t touch me! I don’t want to think about it!” (Farmer 121)

“Anyhow, I’m sorry I was unfair to you” (Farmer 165)

In this scene after Maria sees MacGregor’s clone she seems to be afraid of Matt. Afterwards it becomes apparent that she didn’t mean it, and that it was a mistake, which is what this song is about. It was a mistake that nearly ruined their friendship, and that can sometimes be very hard to forgive. In the song it seems like it is an apology, and that is what Maria would probably want to give to Matt. Because of the clone in the hospital and Maria’s reaction a series of events unfolded that led to Furball being killed and Matt being banned from seeing Maria. Some of this was Matt’s fault, but some of it was Maria’s, and once again this is where she might apologize for it. This song might be listened to after Maria finds out that it wasn’t actually Matt that killed Furball. Almost everyone thought that he had, but later they overheard Felicia telling Tom that she had done it. This meant that the turbulence that their friendship went through was almost for nothing. It was all because of one mistake, though a reasonable one.

Nocturne in C Sharp Minor (No. 20) by Chopin
"Matt knew María hoarded things–worn-out shirts, broken toys, and gift-wrapping paper–and she got hysterical if anything went missing.  Celia said it was because she'd lost her mother when she was only five.

One day María's mother had walked out of the house and never returned.  No one knew where she had gone, or if they did, they weren't talking about it.  When María was small, she imagined her mother had gotten lost in the desert.  She woke up crying that she couldn't hear her mother's voice, but of course she couldn't.  Ever since the, Celia said, María had hung on to things.  It was why she rarely let Furball out of her sight and why the dog was such a wimp." (Farmer 111)

"'I'd feel sorry for you if I hadn't seen María first.'" (Farmer 135)

"'I thought about it a lot when Furball died...'" (Farmer 159)

Both of the quotes above demonstrate how horribly María feels when she loses something dear to her. Losing a family member can be devastating, especially at such a young age. In her mother's case, she must have felt betrayed and abandoned. When Matt supposedly killed Furball, María's emotions would have been a mix of extreme sadness and betrayal. María seems to be the type to brood over her feelings, preferring to wallow in them rather than let them go.  This song was written by Romantic composer Chopin, who is famous for composing pieces that invoke sad feelings. It seems like an appropriate piece for María to listen to, in order to remind herself of her desolate situation.

My understandings by Of Mice & Men

‘ “Oh no!”  Maria said. “I’m not a saint. I have all kinds of faults.” ‘ (Farmer 158)

“ He hugged her and kissed her tear stained face. “I don’t mind,” he whispered her and kissed her tear-streaked face. “If I had a soul I would probably wind up in hell anyways.” (Farmer 159)

"I do like being with you," María said at last. "There's nobody at my school so easy to talk to." (Farmer 159)

This song relates to the relationship between Maria and Matt. Neither is perfect, and each have their own set of faults, but they like each other enough that it doesn’t matter. The last line in the first verse “And if we climb this high I swear we’ll never die” probably isn’t literal but is instead metaphorical. It is the idea that once their relationship has gotten to a certain point they can overcome anything even death, and their relationship will still last. From Maria’s point of view being in a relationship with a clone might leave her open to ridicule, but the idea is together with Matt she can overcome it.
